Automox Review

Verdict: A clean cloud-native patcher with excellent cross-OS coverage; priced per endpoint.

Automox targets a specific and increasingly common pain point: lean IT teams juggling mixed fleets of Windows, macOS, and Linux without the appetite for on-prem patch infrastructure. On that front, it delivers.

What Stands Out

The headline strength is true cross-OS parity. Plenty of tools claim multi-platform support but treat macOS and Linux as afterthoughts. Automox handles all three roughly equally, which is genuinely rare and the main reason to shortlist it.

Being cloud-native with no VPN or on-prem infra is the second big win. You skip the distribution points, relays, and gateway servers that make legacy patch suites a project in themselves. For a small team, that’s the difference between deploying in a day versus a quarter.

Worklets add scripting-based automation flexibility, so you’re not boxed into out-of-the-box patch policies.

Pricing

TierPriceWhat You Get
Manage$3/endpoint/mo (annual)Patch + basic management
Secure$5/endpoint/mo (annual)+ vulnerability remediation

14-day trial, no free tier. Pricing is per-endpoint, billed annually.

The math is the catch. At $3–5/endpoint/month, a 500-machine fleet runs $18K–$30K/year. That’s fine at small scale, but the per-endpoint model compounds as you grow, and there’s no free tier to trial long-term or cover a handful of devices for free.

Where It Falls Short

  • No free tier — you commit or you don’t.
  • Cost scales linearly — no volume relief baked into the advertised tiers.
  • Reporting depth trails enterprise suites — if you need deep compliance dashboards and granular audit reporting, you’ll feel the ceiling.

Bottom Line

Automox is a strong fit for small-to-midsize teams with heterogeneous fleets who value fast setup and zero infrastructure over deep reporting. If you’re a Windows-only shop, cheaper or bundled options likely win. If you need enterprise-grade compliance reporting, look higher up-market. But for the specific niche it targets — cross-OS patching without the ops overhead — it earns its 7.7.
