Microsoft Defender for Business Review

Microsoft’s SMB-focused EDR bundle is a no-brainer if you already live in the Microsoft 365 world—and a harder sell if you don’t.

Verdict

Our score: 7.8/10 | G2: 4.4/5 (300 reviews)

Defender for Business is one of the best value plays in endpoint security for its target audience: small and mid-sized businesses already paying Microsoft. At $3/user/month (billed annually), it’s aggressively priced, and the per-user model means you cover multiple devices per person without stacking costs.

Pricing

TierPriceBillingNotes
Defender for Business$3/user/moAnnualStandalone; included free in M365 Business Premium

As of 2026-06. No free tier, but a free trial is available.

The per-user (not per-device) pricing is a genuine advantage—users with a laptop, desktop, and phone aren’t triple-billed. And if you’re already on M365 Business Premium, this is effectively bundled at no extra cost, which is where the real value lives.

Features

  • EDR built for SMB scale
  • Next-gen antivirus
  • Threat & vulnerability management
  • Automated investigation & remediation
  • Deep M365 integration

The feature set is legitimately strong for the price—auto-investigation and TVM are things you’d normally pay a premium for elsewhere.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Extremely cheap—especially if you already have M365
  • Solid, well-regarded detection
  • Per-user licensing covers multiple devices

Cons

  • Value drops sharply outside the Microsoft ecosystem
  • Licensing nuances (standalone vs. bundled) trip people up
  • Requires tuning to get the most out of it

Bottom Line

If your shop runs on Microsoft 365, Defender for Business is close to a default recommendation—cheap, capable, and integrated. The catch is that its strength is the ecosystem: run a mixed or non-Microsoft environment and the calculus changes considerably. Budget time for tuning and clarify your licensing path (standalone vs. Business Premium) before you buy.

Best for: SMBs already on Microsoft 365 wanting bundled EDR.
